Looking for someone new and interesting to follow on Twitter? How about Mary Lee, the 3,456 pound great white shark with a tracking device actively “pinging” her location via satellite transmitter.  In the past couple years five sharks were tagged with Ocearch to provide real-time tracking data.  Mary Lee has traveled 16,000 miles in the past two years going from Florida to Bermuda to Cape Cod.  Lydia, another world traveler shark, has logged more than 25,000 miles since March of last year.

Katharine, a younger shark has over 16,000 followers on Twitter.  The Twitter accounts were created by anonymous people who were inspired to give these sharks a voice.  Some of the researchers believe the friendly Twitter accounts and shark tracker data are helping publicly change the tone of the conversation around sharks.  After all, you are more likely to have a fatal injury from driving or riding in a car than from a shark.
